o delicado da vida. Perceberei - assim como se come e se vive o gosto da
comida.
Minha voz cai no abismo de teu silêncio. Tu me lês em silêncio. Mas nesse
ilimitado campo mudo desdobro as asas, livre para viver.

Adriana Calcanhotto arrives in London for Brazil Week

Adriana Calcanhotto arrives in London for the first time to present the concert Três (Three), part of Brazil Week. She spoke to Jungle about the show, the project and her expectations of being in London.
What’s the show going to be like?
It’s my first time in London which is really nice, as I have never been there but I have always wanted to go, so that’s important to me. I’ll sing things related to that. But also, I’m going with Três (the name of the concert she’ll present), so Moreno Veloso and Domenico Lancelotti are joining me, which means what I’ll sing will depend on them as well. When we play together we try to find a balance in terms of playing what we want.
But do you already have a playlist? Can you tell us a little about it?
Some things are a bit obvious, especially for when I’m playing in a place for the first time. There are also some songs we always play together (the trio): Rio Longe, by Moreno, some of Domenico’s songs, Madonna’s Music, which we play with two cellos. When we rehearse, we each take a list of possible songs and we pick the final ones together.
We even rehearse some songs and end up not playing them for some reason. That’s very cool, very dynamic. We have a very nice flow working together, it has been like that since the first time. So, we might even decide to play a song there at the show, without rehearsing it. One of the best things about this project is the fact that we are totally in sync musically, so it works.
What should the Britons who don’t know you expect from the concert?
We’ll play popular Brazilian music, maybe some Spanish tunes and others in English. Also, a part of a song in Provençal from the 12th Century, amongst others.
A song in Provençal from the 12th Century?
Yes, it’s from the troubadour Arnault Daniel who invented the sestina. A lot of his poems are only fragments, but this one in particular has got melody and lyrics. It’s quite a long song, and I don’t sing all of it, but it’s very beautiful and moving. Many artists see Provençal as a response to a crisis in Latin languages.
Well, your playlist seems quite varied.
Yes, we don’t really like to have a script, we like to think about each show individually.
How about for your Brazilian fans in the UK, anything special for them?
I’m taking some songs that I imagine they want to hear, but the thing is these songs might not correspond to what they actually want to hear. In that case, we can try and work things out during the show. I’ll take requests if I can, but I also want them to get to know new things and I think they like that as well.
As you said, this is your first time in London. What are your plans as a tourist here?
Well, I won’t have as much time as I’d like, but I certainly want to visit some museums, such as the Tate Modern, and I want to walk in the streets. I think a great way to really explore a place is walking. I wish I could have been to London before, but I’m glad I’m going with this project, which I love. I think it’ll be a very special evening.
You showed interest in staying in a hotel that belonged to the poet Edward Lear. What is your relation to his work?
He wrote nonsense, a typically British style of poetry I’m quite fond of. I really like his work and I’ve even recorded some of his poems that were translated to Portuguese by (writer) Augusto de Campos. The hotel is the place he lived in; it’s small and nice. I’d love to stay there.
About the Brazil Week event, which is bringing the show here, how do you see the inclusion of Brazilian culture in Europe?
I think it’s really interesting, especially for the artists who can show their work. It’s also good for people to get to know another side of Brazilian culture, that doesn’t have to do only with samba and carnival, although my work, as a lot of artists’, wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for samba. But even for non-Portuguese speakers, it’s nice to present the work of artists like Clarice Lispector, which would never be the same in another language.
